At SitePro Solutions, we understand how integral the construction industry is to our country and the entire modern world. Founded by I Build America, Construction Appreciation Week is observed Sept. 14-18. In honor of this week, we’d like to share a few reasons why we appreciate the 11 million construction workers across the country!
Skills and Education
Contrary to outdated stereotypes, today’s construction workers are an educated workforce. They are skilled in trades such as carpentry, electrical, HVAC, plumbing and welding. While this education may come through apprenticeships or trade school, versus a traditional four-year college degree, skilled trades workers must be highly trained and experienced in their fields to become certified. They know how to perform tasks that fewer and fewer Americans are trained to do, which makes them integral to our economy (and in high demand!).
Strong Work Ethic
Construction workers do difficult work, often in tough conditions like extreme heat or icy weather. They are up early and work long hours. No matter the trade, construction workers perform a lot of heavy lifting that most of us couldn’t physically do ourselves. These men and women have an admirably strong work ethic to do such challenging work day in, and day out.
Building Communities
Construction workers build our roads, highways, and bridges so we can commute to work and travel on vacation. They build the stores and office complexes where we shop and work. They build houses and apartment buildings where we live and raise families. They build schools and parks so children have a place to learn and play. They also keep these facilities comfortable and safe for those of us who use them. There is literally no structure in any community that wasn’t made possible by talented, hard-working teams of construction workers.
Vital to the Economy
The construction industry is a major part of the lifeblood of the American economy. Often referred to as a “canary in the coal mine,” construction reflects the future growth and decline of an economy before it can be otherwise detected. A booming construction industry means predictable growth in other areas, as well. Conversely, once the demand for construction starts to cool off, it is a reflection of slowing activity in other industries. The construction industry creates millions of jobs and builds the places of business for millions of other workers.
Worker Shortage
America needs more men and women to enter the construction trades. Construction is a high-growth industry, with skilled workers in high demand on job sites nationwide. In addition to earning great pay and benefits, construction workers feel a sense of pride and accomplishment after an honest day’s work, building their communities.
